I Have Now Learned Two Things From Guitar Hero 2

Dave Mustaine has more talent than I ever, EVER gave him credit for, because Hanger 18 is one HELL of a song.

Buckethead is the only musician I’ve ever heard, with whom I could very well believe that he struck a deal with Satan himself to attain the level of skill he has.

  • I’m slowly three-starring my way through hard on GH II right now (having completely five-starred medium). I’m currently stuck at the Butthole Surfers song, which I need to finish to get that set’s encore. It’s weird how you are naturally able to play some songs better than others, even though they are technically more challanging–I can barely get through Shout at the Devil, but easily four-starred Strutter and Cherry Pie.

I’m finding that hard is harder on GH II, but medium is harder on the first game. I still haven’t managed to five-star all of the songs on that one, and I can’t even four-star Cowboys From Hell.

I really probably should be doing something more productive with my time….

  • I think part of your comment on how songs can be easier though more technically challenging falls a lot on whether you like the song or not. Shout At The Devil didn’t do much for me, and even on Hard, I’ve only 4-starred it and haven’t gone back to it, yet I tore through Sweet Child O’ Mine and Girlfriend with almost no problems at all. But then I was obsessed with nailing the Sweet Child solo, so I went back to it again and again and it didn’t feel like a chore.

And if you’re on Hard, then God Help You with Crazy On You, ’cause that opening acoustic is a BITCH. And a half.

  • I think you’re right insofar that you are much more willing to revisit the songs you actually enjoy hearing and thus get better at playing them much sooner (although this isn’t always the case, as I love Surrender and had a bitch of time five-starring it until I figured out I was rushing it the whole time and just relaxed), but what I’m talking about are songs that you seem to inexplicably do well at the first time you play them, no matter what you think of them. I do like Strutter, but I’m no fan of Cherry Pie, yet I four-starred both of them my very first time playing them, while I’ve kept trying to four-star Shout at the Devil with no success. I think it’s more of a matter that I’m better at the kinds of chord progressions those songs contain, while the odd rhythm of Shout completely throws me off.

And I figured Crazy On You was going to be a killer past medium. Luckily it’s one of my favourite songs.
