More Rock Band Obsessiveness
Just another Friday, entailing a bit of writing on the novel and starting up more articles for GameAxis, ’cause it’s that time of the month again. Nothing else to talk about except for the fact that Harmonix has now released the full set of songs that will appear on Rock Band. Without further ado, here they are. Now we’re looking at a total of 46 songs, with 20 covers and 26 original master tracks. Also, there’s that weird thing there that says co-op encore. This is where you have to start wondering whether or not Neversoft and Activision were on drugs. Co-op encore appears to be exactly what it sounds like; a song that is only playable with someone else. Bizarrely, however, the game has been shipped with co-op quick play strictly ONLINE. Activision/Neversoft somehow figured no one would want to do this with someone at home, and in the wake of the screaming that followed once this news got out, they’re working on a patch that gamers can download to their console that will allow for offline co-op. So far this only applies to the Xbox 360, there’s no word on whether or not a patch will be available for the PS3, Wii, or even what that state of this is like for the PS2. Well done, Activision, goo
d to see you continue your peerless support of this franchise…
This news has pretty much committed me. Steps are now being taken to ensure Rock Band arrives at the doorstep of the In-Laws.
And just to give That Other Music Game a little coverage, here’s a sample of Hit Me With Your Best shot originally by Pat Benatar, with a… how shall I put this… augmented Judy Nails strumming away.

1) “Wave of Mutilation” is from The Pixies second album Doolittle which was released in 1989, which would put it the 80s rather than the 00s.
2) You can be all Mr. Cynical Pants you want, but GHIII has an AWESOME line up of songs (BENATAR!!!!!!! I REPEAT BENATAR!!!!!!!!!) and based on the clip (which admittedly could be an aberration) the “notes” do seem to match the song.
Truthfully, as cool as Rock Band is gonna be, I can definitely wait if GHIII is even 1/5 as righteous as it appears to be.
Well to be fair, GHIII only really starts feeling unnatural when you get into Expert. At this level, it seems like Neversoft didn’t know how to make the game difficult aside from throwing in extra notes everywhere and putting a heavy, HEAVY emphasis on those three note chords.
In the few times that I’ve played GHIII so far, it’s always been on Expert, so I really noticed the difference. Part of this also has to do with the fact that they’ve eased up on the Hammer-On/Pull-Off timing, so you can do it a lot easier in GHIII than in GHII.
Also, I guess there’s just the naive idealist in me. Harmonix still seems like the little guy to me, doing something out of a genuine love for it, whereas Neversoft and Activision are clearly Big Money setting their sights on the cash-in. On the PS3, they’ve fixed it so that while the GHIII guitar will work with Rock Band, the Rock Band Fender WON’T work with GHIII, meaning that if you want both games, you have to buy two sets of guitars. I’m pretty sure this WON’T apply to the PS2, and that ol’ Gibson SGs will work just fine, but they’re really not doing much to impress me as a PS3 owner, and when backed into a corner like this choose one music game for the year, it’s gotta’ be Rock Band. Harmonix made their game an “open platform” in that it allows any controller to work with the game, where Red Octane–the manufacturers of the Guitar Hero controllers since the beginning–have now LOCKED Guitar Hero II, to make sure it only uses Red Octane peripherals and no other controllers. This is particularly ironic to me since Red Octane’s primary business before Guitar Hero was making 3rd party controllers for Sony games.
I’ll still probably get Guitar Hero III at some point, when time has passed and the price has gone down, but for 2007, it’s definitely Rock Band for me. Activision forced a financial decision, and swung me in Rock Band’s direction with their “Choose our instrument or theirs” ultimatum on the PS3.
