Coming Up For Air
My right arm does indeed now feel like it’s hanging on by a single, battered tendon, but it was worth it. Rock Band 2 pretty much lives up to the promise. It’s a phenomenal game that is really only let down by one feature, or lack thereof; they took out the solo campaign. There’s still a solo campaign of sorts, where you can earn money and such, but it no longer shows you the “stars” that indicate how well you’ve done on a particular song. A star listing however, is still available in Quick Play, but that means that you can no longer earn money. The heart of the game is Band World Tour which you can now play solo or go online with, and… it’s huge. It’s gonna’ take a while to plow through that. The game also seems to have taken the same progression in difficulty from Guitar Hero 1 to Guitar Hero 2, in that Rock Band 2 has a noticeable climb in difficulty of songs. One thing I was extremely amazed with however, was the fact that Ace of Spades came up as one of the songs in Rock Band 2 and I remember, just a few years ago, this song utterly annihilated me on Expert in the original Guitar Hero and even though I didn’t 5 star it on this go through, it wasn’t a struggle to survive either. It’s good to know that I’ve actually progressed some thanks to obsessively playing with a plastic toy guitar.

Favourite song so far?
Uh… There’s a lot of them. Pure 80′s nostalgia has already made “Eye of the Tiger” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” some favorites to play just for cheesy fun. “Drain You” is actually another fun song to play for people with memories of growing up in the 90′s. As far as technical songs go, I finally hit my first wall with Tenacious D’s “Master Exploder” and that song is INCREDIBLY fun to play but also incredibly demanding, so I gotta’ sit down and nail that sucker, it’s a Hammer On/Pull Off monster and it seems like I either need to calibrate my game better for this TV, or else they’ve changed the timing on HOPOs slightly because my timing seems to be a teensy bit off and I’ve been missing HOPO sequences I would normally nail in RB1. There are 84 songs in the game, but I’m not sure how many of them I’ve actually played now since the lack of a solo tour means you don’t get a complete listing of “done and not done.” The instrument specific challenges are there, but they’re just that; instrument specific, so not all the songs will appear in the guitar challenges, similar to the other instruments.
