MC Of Rock

It’s actually just after 3 am, but as far as I’m concerned this is the end of “the day,” so it still counts.

We packed up the PS3 and all the Rock Band gear and schlepped it down to a hall that a friend of ours was using for his birthday party.  Because the hall was actually part of an apartment complex that was formerly a school, said friend decided to make it highschool themed birhtday party, with the Rock Band area (thrown up on a wall thanks to a digital light projector) carrying an official tag on the wall that read “Audio/Visual Crew.”

Much to my surprise, despite the fact that lots of people there had Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band experience, no one played any instrument on Expert.  Also to my surprise, Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi was not played once the entire evening and in fact the most popular regularly played song was Roxanne by Sting n’ the boys.

Unsurprisingly, because this is, after all, Toronto, the most frequently played band was Rush.

All in all, a good time was had by all.  But my right arm now feels like it may fall off.

  • Hey! I thought you were pulling an Allan and neglecting your blogging duties, only to discover that you’ve been doing your regular quota someplace else.

One thing you have to remember about most other folks is that as much as they enjoy playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band they also have these odd things called “lives” that inhibit their ability to devote the kind of time needed to develop the skills required to successfully complete a song on expert. One thing about us writing folk is that we enjoy an unusual amount of disposable time to waste each day attempting to master the rapid strumming technique needed to Five Star Creep (thus far I’ve only been able to do it twice), so it’s a bit unfair to question the gaming courage of those who have jobs that actually require they’re leaving their homes. Plus, I find a lot of people are genuinely phobic of the orange fret, which is weird.

And, as far as I’m concerned, the one song choice that truly tests the cool quotient of your peers is Gimme Shelter. Anyone who can resist the urge to play that song is too lame for any decent person to associate with. And I’m not just saying that because I can consistently Gold Star it on lead guitar.

    Actually, I am.
