Back To The Last Generation

Sunday was largely spent revisiting another one of those PS2 games I’d been meaning to play for a while but hadn’t, though a copy of the game was dutifully purchased and put on the “back-log.”  That time is now, I guess, and Odin Sphere is getting some serious spin-time in the PS3.

It has the basic characteristics of any Atlus game; dark plot, complicated characters and the lingering suspicion that this Will Not End Well.  But it’s also got some of the most beautiful 2D illustrated artwork of that last (or even current) generation of games, and I have to admit that after so many years of being exposed to polygons and 3D environments, going back to some gorgeous 2D is a breath of fresh air.

I never thought I’d be saying this in this 21st century world of gaming we live in, but I really miss 2D.  I wish more titles would go back to this.

Finally

< ![CDATA[That was a damn hard game, but Bionic Commando:  Rearmed has finally been beaten after numerous ass-kickings received after dinner.  Pictured here from the original game is the final boss, who also remains the final boss in the new version but is named “The Leader.”  Yes, that is who you think it is, no the final boss fight does not take place in Auschwitz, but instead, a flying island named “Albatross.”  Hey, I don’t make this stuff up, I just play it.

Oh, those whacky Japanese…

Boo For Delays

Local pride was denied today when Moving Pictures, the Rush album scheduled to go on sale this week on Rock Band was postponed due to “technical difficulties.”  The most popular theory as to why this has happened is because the song YYZ
is an instrumental, and perhaps Harmonix, the developers, failed to completely take into account how the lack of vocals was going to have an overall impact on the game, ie, online play, leaderboards, etc.

Oh well, another week or two and it’ll be here, I’m sure…

And Done

Finished Siren: Blood Curse today. All in all, it takes away the bad after taste that Condemned 2: Bloodshot left behind. Decent length for the game, over 12 hours, genuine scares (really, REALLY intense ones at times) and a much more satisfying ending although maddeningly complex and obscure in that way that only Japanese, with their “give ‘em the pieces and let them sort it out themselves” narrative sensibility can do. All in all, pretty fun, though difficult to go back and replay just because some parts of the game are just so damn stressful.

Quiet Monday

< ![CDATA[Aside from writing a little of comic, not much else going on.  I messed around some more with the demo for that upcoming new Star Wars game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, or, as I like to think of it, “STFU.”

It’s not a bad game.  Since Star Wars games are historically quite horrible, the fact that this game is competent makes it a 10 experience by Star Wars gaming standards, so I’m going to be getting it.  It’s a nice change of pace to run around as a Dark side Jedi apprentice force choking everyone in sight and hurling force lightning around.  It tends to make you do really irritating things which, when I exercise my sadistic side, has caused no end of amusement in the Wife, thus causing a relabeling of the game to Star Wars:  The Douche Unleashed, she finds my obsession with finding new ways to be a jerk to be a constant entertainment.

The New Digs

< ![CDATA[

Last night I found in my e-mail in-box an invitation to join the Home Beta.  Home is essentially a free “Second Life” (read that, 3D chatroom, or socialware, if you prefer) service that will be releasing to all PS3 owners before the end of the year.  So far it looks good, but as a Beta, it’s still missing a lot of content.  I can see the potential here for some, but right now, it’s kind of not doing enough to pull in the socially motivated, Sims/Second Life crowd, and not offering enough to give gamers a reason to mess with it.

Fixed With New Digs

Hopefully this won't turn into a regular event of migrating from blog to blog.

Re-installation

The PC is slowly getting back up to speed after being replaced. This time it wasn’t anything quite as catastrophic as the hard disk suddenly dying. It was more like the gradual decay of the machine, specifically its power supply unit. For the last couple of weeks it’s been getting harder and harder to power up the machine. At first it manifested as pushing the power button and getting a flashing amber light instead of the usual whirs that signified booting up, but that was remedied by simply unplugging the USB external hard drive that was attached. Soon that work around failed to do it, and over the last few days, turning on the PC has been similar to trying to get an old car to work, with multiple pumps of the power button until grudgingly, it finally starts up. Since we were faced with blowing a couple of hundred dollars to fix it, or splurging a few hundred to just get a new PC, we opted for the latter. I can’t really blame the old PC for dying; it was two years old and actually survived being freighted to the other side of the planet, so it definitely has the mileage.

In other news… Canada losing to Singapore in Ping Pong? UN. AC. CEPTABLE.

Nerdgasm Of Epic Proportions

The Yin-Yang of nerd-dom is now complete. The first side was done online back in 2003. Now, the final side is sure to make the pants of Trekkies the world over explode with… enthusiasm now that their fantasies are about to come true.

Awards & Networking

Today we went down to the Toronto Reference Library to take in the 4th annual Doug Wright Awards, which is basically a new award given out to Canadian artists and cartoonists. The inductee into the “Giants of the North” hall o’ fame was Lynn Johnston, better known for her enduring news strip For Better or For Worse. It’s nice to be living in a country again where people have extraordinary talent and actually get recognized for it.

We also bought a new router for our home. I love this thing. It was actually cheaper than our old router, but is specifically built for wired internet connections. It seemed like our previous router was dying on us, as we were experiencing sporadic internet connections, and when we asked our service provider about it, according to their logs, the connection to our home was stable the entire time. When we got the new router up and running, it was like a revelation. The PS3, which previously kicked off every PC in the house off the internet anytime it tried to connect, suddenly did so without bullying the other computers. Moreover, it did not mysteriously disconnect every time I put in a new game, nor did it crap out on us just because we happened to move to new menu for selecting songs while playing online for games like Rock Band. In other words, it looks like most of our minor nitpicks with the PS3 and its voracious yet finicky appetite for the internet can be blamed on our router, which was actually a wireless router and seemed to object strongly to not being used in such a fashion.

I love our new router. It’s the Bees Knees.
