Playing For Shinies

The Playstation network recently upgraded the operating system on the Playstation 3, and now PS3 owners have this thing-a-ma-bob called “trophies,” which are the Sony equivalent of Microsoft’s “Achievement Points” for the Xbox 360. Unfortunately, there’s going to be a bit of a wait before all the games get patches to allow trophy acquisition, so for the moment, there’s only ONE game that gives them to players. Sony has also announced that games, when finally patched for trophies, will NOT retroactively award them. In other words, if you had to satisfy a certain criteria to get a particular trophy (ie, finish the game, is usually one) the system will NOT read your previous game save, see that you’ve accomplished this, and give you the trophy. Everyone starts from zero, meaning that if you want that trophy, you’ll simply have to create a new save file and start over again.

Needless to say, my teetering on the edge of completing “the Big Boss Emblem,” the single hardest achievement in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is going to sit there, incomplete, until the official Sony Trophy for the task is patched in.

In the meantime, I just bought that one game that has trophies enabled for lack of anything better to do and am now shamelessly trying to get them.
