Oh Gods Of Gaming

I IMPLORE you.  Please, please, PLEASE, don’t let Tim Schafer’s latest upcoming game, Brutal Legend tank the way Psychonauts did.  We need this man to succeed.  We need these games to counter the flood of me-too first person shooters.  WE NEED GAMES THAT ARE ACTUALLY GOOD, DAMMIT.  I can’t remember the last time a trailer for a game got me this excited, but I was whooping with joy when I saw this:

  • I am not a fan of EA, not in any way, shape or form. In fact years ago I made a pledge to never, ever, purchase their games out of principle.

Never say never I guess because this game looks awesome. The trailer blew me a way. I really need to get my gaming sorted out (have PS2 but no TV – a very long story) because this looks like a game I would play, want to play.

  • I can sympathize with your nausea towards EA. I too was pretty much like that up until about two years ago. At that point, EA actually made a statement to the industry about wanting to create good, original games. I, of course, rolled my eyes and laughed at this, but in the span of that time, we’ve had Skate, Mirror’s Edge, Dead Space, Rock Band and now, Tim Freakin’ Schafer. It really does seem like they’re trying to turn themselves around, while Activision, a company I used to love, has turned into the new EA. How many Guitar Hero games have they cranked out already? Holy crap.

  • This is the first thing I’ve ever seen that makes me think it might be time to invest in next-gen.

It had me with, “Don’t tell me I’ve been slaying hot girls all this time.”

That said, something tells me (it’s probably the inner cynic I try so hard to ignore) that a video game rooted in subversive humor is doomed to, if not failure, then a lack of the recognition it deserves. As painful as it is for me to say, most people prefer their entertainment to be sincere, even if it’s sincerely terrible.

The industry is only going to start produce interesting and unique games when the consumers begin buying them.

  • Dude, it’s Tim Schafer. Let me repeat, TIM FREAKIN’ SCHAFER. This is the man that gave me Grim Fandango and Psychonauts, he could make a game about drying cardboard with a hair dryer and it would be genius somehow. There’s NO FREAKING WAY I’m not getting this game, day one, on Rocktober 13th.

I think the game might have a shot. It won’t pull in Halo or GTA numbers, but it’s got Jack Black, it’s got EA marketing, and it’s got appearances by Rob Halford, Lemmy Klimster and Lita Ford. That’ll help to pull in the crowds that might otherwise ignore the game.

I’m not saying the game will sell like gangbusters, but hopefully it won’t tank the way Psychonauts did.
