The End Of The First Half
So I just got to the final episode of my Battlestar Galactica season 4.0 compilation, that signifies the end of the first half of season 4.
Holy.
Frakkin’.
Hell.
WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WHEN THIS SHOW IS OVER?!? WHAT AM I GONNA’ DO?!?!?
I get more and more depressed thinking I’ll never see a show this good in my lifetime again…
I Can’t Believe It’s Almost Over
When I got this in the mail today, it was with a mix of both hand rubbing anticipation and mild sadness mixed with dread. For the last few years, Battlestar Galactica has been one of the single, greatest things to ever happen to science fiction television. Yes, in my opinion better than Babylon 5 and, in a fit of heresy, yes, better than Star Trek . Waaaaaaaaaaaay better.
But now, with this latest installment in my hands, it means one thing; the ride is almost over. Season 4 is the final chapter of this ground breaking series for SF-TV, and once it is all said and done (and it NEEDS to be all said and done, all good stories are done eventually) then what happens when the light is put out? Where do I turn for an SF-TV experience like this once it’s all over? WHERE CAN I GO?!?
That’s the problem with something as good as this. You feel the lack when it’s not there anymore, kind of like when your significant other goes on a trip without you.
First Impressions Of Season 3
Also, for some reason, episode 15, Dirty Hands was one of my favorites this season, which probably isn’t going to be a very popular choice…
Marathon Midpoint
So I just finished watching episode 12 of the third season of Battlestar Galactica.
Holy crap. I will never see a TV series this good again in my life time.
Marathon Material
No prizes for guessing what I’m going to be up to now that it’s arrived in the mail…
More Geek Stuff
A couple of arrivals in the mail today which made a) both the Wife and I pleased and b) made me extraordinarily happy but caused the Wife’s eyes to roll. The first item, which was mutually pleasing, was this:
Having enjoyed the movie immensely when it first popped up in theaters, I’d been looking to pick this up for a while. Now that we’ve got a PS3 and a high-def TV, there didn’t seem much point in picking it up on anything but Blu-Ray, so now we’ve got it. It was one of those films that took me by surprise because we weren’t sure whether it was going to be any good or not, and surprised us a lot by having a particular sensibility that can only be described as “80′s.” In the same way that movies such as Gremlins and The Goonies were essentially made for younger viewers but had a slight, darker edge to them that made them entertaining viewing for adults, so too does Monster House possess that same kind of edginess rarely seen in cinematic fare for youngsters these days. I’m glad we’ve got it in our collection now, and though Blade-Runner still eludes me, dammit…
The other one is pure science fiction geek porn for me. The Wife tolerates–just barely–my near religious dedication to Quite Possibly The Greatest Science Fiction Television Show In The History Of Science Fiction Television. I still haven’t seen season 3 as I’m waiting for that season collection to be released. The Battlestar Galactica series is a point of minor irritation for the collector in me because it’s a casualty of sorts of the format war. I’d much, MUCH rather have this in high definition if possible, but BSG being under the umbrella of Universal, it means that for the foreseeable future, the only two flavors the sets will be available in is DVD and HD-DVD. Fortunately the fact that the format war is essentially over means that BSG will likely appear on Blu-Ray someday, but that won’t be for at least another year, and I’m not going to wait THAT long just to watch season 3 in high definition. So for now, DVDs will do, and I’ll revisit the possibility of getting these in a better format when more time passes, HD-DVD is truly dead, and Universal has already grudgingly transitioned over to Blu-Ray. Not a perfect solution, but thankfully at least the format war is essentially over now, so it’s just down to waiting.
And tomorrow, if the fates are willing…
Damn. Didn’t See That One Coming.
I am now well and truly in full on vampire mode, having gotten out of bed as the sun was almost completely set.
I am also now amazed and somewhat bummed out over the fact that Ron Moore has announced that Battlestar Galactica will–as Edward Olmos hinted–be ending as of the fourth season. This is a bit weird for me since I love the show, but am only half-way done, since I watch the DVD collections rather than the actual broadcast episodes. On the other hand, this is a pretty logical progression since–in novel-like fashion–Moore has been advancing the characters and stories with irreparable changes and the whole “we’re looking for Earth” thing kind of needs to be addressed. Still, better to end it with people loving the show than just let the momentum run out and turn your fans against you, a la the X-Files back in the day. It’s a gutsy move, and I’m really curious to see how this will go, since I had thought they wouldn’t be able to tell the entire tale in four seasons and would need at least a fifth to pull it off.
In other news, the second story for the Liquid City anthology has been done, sent off to the artist and he says he’s going to start on his roughs within a week. What was supposed to be my “easy” 10 page story once again ballooned into something 17 pages in length, but with the artist looking it over, there may be room to cut things down. Man, I remember there was a time when I could actually tell a story in less than 8,000 words, and now I’ve gotten to the point where it’s nearly impossible. How the hell did that happen?
There’s also a little bit of work to be done for IGN, as the editor I was previously in contact with has moved on, and after pitching an idea to the New Guy, he decided to run with it, so I’ve got to start doing some prep work on that. And the last of the articles for GameAxis needs to be put away for the month, so I guess I’d better start tidying that up as well.
Getting Stuff Back
Now that the move is something like two weeks away, people are slowly either receiving things from us that we are trying to get rid of, or giving things back we had borrowed. Case in point, Battlestar Galactica DVDs. I first saw the new BSG when a friend over here loaned me his Australian version of the mini-series. I held onto it waaaaay longer than I should have, even after getting the season 1 and 2 collections for myself, so I returned that today. I also got back my season 1 collection from someone who’d borrowed it for a few months, and then loaned to the same person season 2 so that he could try and watch it over the weekend and return it to me by Monday.
Also, even though it took far longer than it should have, I have been contacted by the Ministry of Manpower and told that my Employment Pass has been approved and I can once again get a green card to remain legal in Singapore. Unfortunately, of course, this means that as soon as I get said Employment Pass, I’ll have to turn right around and cancel it. I was kind’a hoping that they would have given it to me a couple months earlier when I actually tried to renew it, but bureaucracy being what it is, they are now issuing it to me only now. It’s unfortunate, because the temporary visa they stamped me with in the meantime actually expires on January 9th. If they’d just stamped it for two more days, I wouldn’t need to get the Employment Pass and could have told them to just cancel it right there. However, bureaucracy being what it is, there are rules and this is one I’ll just have to laboriously navigate through. Fun, fun, fun…
